1950 Bowman Football Complete Set

By Dean Hanley
Owner and Founder of Dean's Cards

The 1950’s was the start of the Bowman and Topps Wars. During the 1950’s the number of teams and players would increase, therefore there would be more cards available then in previous sets.

The 1950 Bowman Football Complete Set contains 144 cards. This set is truly a classic and a treasure to have. Collectors like this set because it is quite the challenge to piece on together. There were not that many cards for this series produced. This set also contains no errors or short prints. When this series of cards was first introduced it was sold in nickel wax packs. Only on a real rare occasion can you find a wax pack for this series in today’s time.

The photos on these cards have one of four possible positions/poses. The card features either a close up, kicking pose, catching pose or the player running. When you flip the card over you can tell that Bowman still had not changed what the backs of the cards looked like. The back is on a very plain piece of cardboard paper with the players name in red. Below that, in black ink is a short bio with the position the player had at the time.
The key rookie cards in this set are
#5 Y.A Tittle,
#6 Lou Groza,
#9 Tony Canadeo,
#35 Joe Perry,
#45 Otto Graham,
and #52 Elroy Hirsch.

1957-58 Topps Basketball Complete Set.

By Dean Hanley
Owner and Founder of Dean's Cards

The 1957-58 Topps Basketball Complete Set is considered to be a fairly scarce set. Even though it is scarce we have managed to build one. The1957-58 basketball season consisted of 8 teams that were divided into two divisions. Even though the color barrier was broken by then, ( due to Jackie Robinson), the set still only has a total of 10 African American Players.

The set also features 21 Hall of Famers which include Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and Bob Pettit. Nearly all the players in this set are a Rookie card because there had not been a major basketball complete set since the 1948 Bowman Basketball Complete Set.

It is very hard to get this set in a high condition. The condition that we currently built is in Excellent. The reason it is hard to acquire in such a high condition is due to the fact that when these cards were sheeted they were often un-centered and were printed with a snowy background. As a result of bad centering and printing some backs of the cards are printed upside down.

The players on the cards are featured in the vintage uniforms of the time. The shorts were shorter back then and the tanks were tighter. Some of the cards feature multiple players in the background or faded out crowds of people.

The back of the cards feature the players biography, statistics and even had a generically draw basketball player. As mentioned earlier, some of the backs were upside down. This set will make a great addition to any collectors set.

1953 Topps Baseball Complete Set

By Dean Hanley
Owner and Founder of Dean's Cards

The 1953 Topps Baseball Complete Set is one of the most beautiful and artistic sets that Topps has ever created. The set consists of 280 cards that were released in four different series. This set is missing cards #253, 261, 268, 271, 275 and 276. This was due to the fact that Topps hoped to nab players who had a contract with Bowman, but the contract was not expired yet. When these cards were first introduced they were sold in Wax packs for  five cents each.

The beautiful portrait like images are based on actual photographs of the more popular players from the series such as Mantle, Robinson, Paige, Berra, Rizutto and Campanella.

The boarders of these cards are solid white. On the front side bottom there is a box that features the players name, position, team and the logo of the team. The backs of the cards feature the player’s stats from 1952 and a Dugout quiz. In this year they even decided to distinguish between the American League and the National League. If the player was in the American League the box is red, for the National League it is black.

The top selling and most valuable cards in this set are the Mantle, Mays and Robinson cards.

This set is very hard to come by due to the many short prints, slim high numbers and variations. With our high inventory of vintage cards we have 5 different sets available that range from Fair up to Excellent Mint. We also have a Near Complete Set and a Low Number Set Available.
